Independent Music Sampler #162

Aldora Britain Records proudly presents Rowan, an eclectic collection of 25 independent and underground artists from all around the globe. This release is dedicated to Bo Goldman, co-screenwriter of the unforgettable One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest; John Gosling, The Kinks' keys man on Lola and other classic 70s records; and Toussaint McCall, the American 60s R&B rarity.

This week, we welcome back several familiar faces. In the Americana and roots field, Dusty Wright returns, as well as Jim Page and Joel Murach. Peter Lehndorff keeps with this theme, and The River's Edge take things off in a more funk-inclined direction. There is a spiritual offering from John R. Mabry, and a gold-studded selection of fantastic folk musicians. These include Jay Ottaway, The Legendary Ten Seconds, and Jude Edwin-Scott.

Going off on a more 'indie' tangent, we have the pop punk of NI/NA, the psychedelia of Simon Bromide, and the lo-fi alternative musings of House & Hawk, Mighty Lightweights, and Belasis. 24Club are all about the dub, and Graceful, Cime, and Keith Pray bring experimentation to the fore. Go Down Records, Electric Talon Records, and Cactus Rock Records also appear.

The flac version of this sounds great in my truck... not a crunch, clip or boom to be heard. That, in itself, gets this major points. This is a lovely combination of early Floyd, U2 and a few San Francisco bands from the '60s with a heavy dose of Helmet tossed in. It's definitely best of breed when it comes to modern psych stuff. Even without a Hammond B3, it gets an easy A+... rick-taylor
