about

Independent Music Sampler #134

Aldora Britain Records proudly presents Pogue Mahone!, an eclectic collection of 25 independent and underground songs from all around the globe. This collection's title is in memory of Pogues bassist Darryl Hunt, formerly of Plummet Airlines. Thank you for the music.

This week, ABR is honoured to introduce Ramblin' Jack Elliott, a man who influenced, and could could count amongst his fans, such icons as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash and Woody Guthrie. He features here alongside his friend Garrick Rawlings. We also fittingly welcome back the rollicking rhythm and blues of The Mysterious Wheels, the band that features Pogues drummer Andrew Ranken on vocals. Andrew and The Mysterious Wheels open the compilation.

Elsewhere, Andy Pratt returns with his quirky electro-tinged jazz, Tom Andes brings us some honky-tonking country gospel, and Genevieve Jaide contributes her heartfelt contemporary folk. There is the deep and dark cabaret of Oli Spleen, the American troubadour folk rock of Joel David Weir, and the story-song contemporary folk of Steve Warner Folk. There is post-punk experimentalism from Armchairanarchists, cinematic post-punk revival from Annual Leaf, and emo-influenced indie pop from Chris Holland. Glass Island return with their expansive modern progressive rock, and Mike Weaver gives us tender-hearted travelling folk. Wreck Rebirth, bringing us crunching DIY indie punk, is our final returning artist.

Pogue Mahone! also has the honour of highlighting two fantastic independent labels. Big Stir Records snapshot some of their melodic, harmony-driven garage rock via the hattrick of Librarians With Hickeys, Walker Brigade and Crossword Smiles. Then Blackjack Illuminist Records give us a glimpse into their dream punk world of post-punk and synthwave with contributions from Fir Cone Children and Feu Follet.

As always, please download, listen loud, dig deeper with your discoveries, and support Aldora Britain Records and independent music.
