Jim Powell returns to Aldora Britain Records, venturing deep into his love of traditional folk music. 'Brains S.A.' is the new release and is backed up by a lovely, acoustic version of 'I Never Spoke Your Name', a track originally released on Jim's 2021 album, Beneath the Bark.

'Brains S.A.' is a spectacular departure for this Californian singer/songwriter. The composition looks more closely at Jim's love of traditional British music, breathing new life into the tavern songs of old. The predominate tin whistle feature is breath-taking and casts up images of the valleys and landscapes of Britain, specifically the Welsh countryside. The reimagining of 'I Never Spoke Your Name' is worthy of a mention too. Stripped to its bare bones, it is a fascinating and honestly revealing cut. The kind of recording that would make you check out it's mother-album, the brilliant Beneath the Bark.

The flac version of this sounds great in my truck... not a crunch, clip or boom to be heard. That, in itself, gets this major points. This is a lovely combination of early Floyd, U2 and a few San Francisco bands from the '60s with a heavy dose of Helmet tossed in. It's definitely best of breed when it comes to modern psych stuff. Even without a Hammond B3, it gets an easy A+... rick-taylor
